What is a Bonsai Tree?

Bonsai is a Japanese word meaning “planted in a container” or “planted in a shallow tray.” They are a symbol of harmony, patience and simplicity and are specially cultivated to symbolize even more specific qualities. Despite being commonly associated with Japanese history, bonsai actually originated in China around 200 BC and came to Japan 1000 years later. It was officially introduced to the United States in 1876. The oldest known bonsai tree is well over 1000 years old and lives in Italy in the Crespi Bonsai Museum. Size ranges from only a few inches wide and tall to 32 feet wide and 16 ft tall.
