Front Door Cheat Sheet: Wreaths & Swags
Your home’s entry sets your visitors’ first impression, so keep it simple and bold. For a standard 36" door, a 22–26" wreath leaves a little breathing room around the edges; go 28–30" for oversized doors or a statement look. Prefer vertical drama? A swag/teardrop hangs like a tapered bouquet, great for narrow doors, apartments, or paired under a lantern. Use an over-the-door hanger or a removable hook to attach these to your doors. Add a ribbon to hide the hardware and soften the look. Bend and arrange wired stems or simply fluff non-wired elements so that flowers, berries, and pumpkins are evenly spaced. Want a matched set? Choose a wreath plus a coordinating garland to frame the door and echo the same botanicals.
Draping Guide for Mantel Garlands
Garlands are the easiest “instant fall” trick. For a tailored look on a mantel, match the width of the mantle. For a more relaxed drape, choose a garland longer than the mantel, and include an extra 1 to 2 feet per side for the swoop. For stairs and banisters, secure every 12–18" with ties and face leaves outward. Pro tip: Repeat one hero element (sunflowers, magnolia leaves, or hydrangeas) from wreath to garland so the whole room reads as a set without feeling too matchy.
Swags & Teardrops: Slim & Stylish
Swags and teardrops are the wreath’s chic cousins, offering the same harvest charm with a slimmer footprint. Hang one where a round wreath would feel crowded, such as narrow doors, cabinet fronts, mirrors, stair newel posts, and even mailboxes. On double doors, try an asymmetrical pair like a round wreath on one side and a garland or swag on the other for instant style. Love texture? Pick berries, pumpkins, and mixed foliage. Prefer a clean look? Go magnolia, olive, or maple leaf. Swags and teardrops fluff fast, store flat, and make effortless hostess gifts that outlast fresh flowers.
Covered Porches & Weather-Smart Use
These pieces shine indoors and in sheltered outdoor locations like covered porches, awnings, or entry alcoves that protect them from direct sun, rain, and wind. If your display is in a breezy area, add a discreet touch of clear fishing line at the base for extra security without compromising the look. When the season winds down, simply dust them off and store in a cool, dry place to keep them looking fresh year after year.
Shape, Hang, Store: 3 Easy Steps
Shape: Fluff non-wired foliage or bend and arrange wired stems until the piece looks full. Step back and balance the flowers, berries, and pumpkins. Hang: Use a wreath hanger, removable hook, or ribbon loop. For garlands, anchor the ends first, and then work to the middle. Add battery-powered micro-lights if you want to add some sparkle. Store: Pop each piece in a wreath or garland bin. Cushion statement blooms with tissue, label by size and style (“24" hydrangea wreath,” “6' magnolia garland”), and you’ll be holiday-ready next year in minutes.
