How to Measure for an Artificial Tree or Plant: Size & Style Guide
Cindy VenerioWondering how tall a faux tree should be for your space?
We’ve all been there—you fall in love with a gorgeous faux tree, check out in a hurry, and wait with excitement…only to find out it’s too tall, too wide, or doesn’t fit your room’s vibe. That’s why Nearly Natural is here to help you find the perfect fit the first time.
This guide will show you how to measure for an artificial tree, where to place plants in your home (including ideal plants in foyers), and how to choose the right size and shape to complement your interior design—including tips for artificial Christmas trees and everyday greenery alike.
Step 1
Decide Where Your Tree or Plant Will Live
Before you start browsing, choose the space where your tree or plant will go. Ask yourself: is this a focal point or a subtle accent? Will it be seen from seated or standing eye level?
Living room
A large faux Fiddle Leaf Fig or Bird of Paradise creates an eye-catching anchor in corners or beside sofas.
Foyer
Looking for the best plants in foyer spaces? Try a tall, slim faux olive or bamboo tree to create a grand entrance.
Home Office
Need a touch of greenery to boost creativity? Small faux palms or snake plants work beautifully near desks.
Kitchen Nook
A colorful faux arrangement in a terracotta planter adds cheer without taking up much space.
Small Spaces
Even a dorm or studio can benefit from faux plants—choose compact greenery with slim bases to save floor space.
💡 Interior design tip: Faux plants soften harsh lines and bring calming, natural balance to your décor.
Keep in mind when decorating with your artificial greenery:
- Center of Attention: ARTificial greenery can add an element of nature to any space, some items are more subtle while others such as artificial arrangements can add a pop of color and command attention.
- Furniture: This is important when choosing greenery that blends with your existing décor, if your style is more eclectic, you can mix different styles of greenery together.
- Safety: If you have small children, fireplaces, candles or other natural elements, remember to place your new tree in a safe space.
- Theme: No matter your décor style from minimalist to rustic, we have a tree for you. If staying consistent to this style scheme is important look for greenery that blends.
- Pets: Our plants and trees are so realistic some animals might think they are real. Remember to be careful with animals eating the items, you should discourage them from getting close.
Step 2
How to Measure for an Artificial Tree or Plant
Once you know the room, here’s how to measure properly:
What You’ll Need
-
Measuring tape or ruler
-
Phone or pen and paper for notes
-
Ladder (for ceiling checks)
-
Optional: painter’s tape to visualize placement
Height:
-
Measure from the floor to the ceiling (or surface, if placing on a table).
-
Standard ceiling heights:
-
Modern homes: ~9 feet
-
Older homes: ~8 feet
-
Leave 6–12 inches of clearance above your plant or artificial Christmas tree, especially for holiday toppers or natural airflow.
Width:
-
Measure floor or table space horizontally.
-
Subtract a few inches to avoid crowding and leave room for décor or furniture.
-
For tabletop plants, measure both the surface area and vertical space above.
How We Measure at Nearly Natural
When you're browsing Nearly Natural’s site, we want you to feel confident about size and scale. Here's how we measure:
-
Height: From the floor (or base of the pot) to the tallest tip of the foliage, leaf, or branch.
-
Width: Taken at the widest natural spread after the item is fully shaped.
-
Planter Included: Our listed heights include the planter or non-decorative pot.
-
Wreaths: Diameter is listed across the widest point.
Note: Measurements may vary slightly based on how much “fluffing” or shaping you do. That’s the beauty of customization!

Are your artificial trees silk or rubber snd can they be used on an open screened outdoor lanai? Height is not an issue. Most importantly foliage must be rubberized .. silk coloration will run. What are they set in .. can foam or other material tolerate getting wet/damp?
What are the rules for choosing containers/pots for artificial trees?
